On the ‘Spring Studies’ by Vassiliki Koskiniotou


Having rendered visible a universe of microcosms of suspending and spiritual abstract forms, as well as archetypal symbols, the painter Vassiliki Koskiniotou has secured for her art a place on the verge between the visual and poetic act, the image and speech, the trace and memory.

In her studio the dispersed figures and colours, the circles and curves, arrows and little homes, grains and ladders have assumed a life of their own, within space, matter, and spirit.

In a first contact the works of Koskiniotou are characterized by a dualism of diametrically contrary sensations: on the painting’s surface there seem to have been depicted images of living organisms as they appear under the microscope, at the same time that one feels standing in front of windows opening to the soul.

The absence of the human figure is moderated and insinuated by the presence of the home, the boat or a ladder as constructions of human civilization, while mother-nature is always much more directly stated through the grain, the moon, the rain, the spirals and other symbols of the natural world.

The painter frequently integrates in her works lines from poems or thoughts and thereby the silent artistic process of painting fuses with the word which includes the concept of sound.
Despite the undisputed imagination and freedom which are ‘enabled’ and dictated by the incorporation of the usage of poetry, of the symbols of the subconscious and the elements of orgiastic nature in artistic creation, her works seem to be born through a well-studied process and the construction of an entire method.

The transcendental character and sensitivity which exude from the works of Vassiliki Koskiniotou are due to the fact that an integral part and source of inspiration of her work are not only Poetry itself as the sublime linguistic expression of the human condition, but also a personal conscious poetic perception of the world and life itself.
